Obituary of Harold A. Ray, Jr.

HERKIMER – Mr. Harold A. Ray, Jr., passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Wednesday morning December 27, 2017 at Homelife at Folts, Herkimer, NY.

He was born on April 1, 1929 in Mohawk, a son of the late Harold A., Sr. and Clara (Hughes) Ray. A lifelong area resident, he was raised and educated in Mohawk, graduating from Mohawk school. He served in the United States Air Force from 1947 until 1949. On October 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Therese A. Hassett in the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Therese passed away on August 14, 2013 after nearly 60 loving years of marriage.

Harold’s life was dedicated to his family and friends here in the Valley. He worked with his dad at Mohawk Hardware for many years then went on and started his successful business known to many as Valley Electric which he operated for over 50 years. He was the Mayor of Mohawk for two terms in the 1960’s. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners as well as the Kiwanis. Cruising with his wife in the St. Lawrence, Bahamas, or the Greek Island, and even a trip to Ireland, were treasured memories to be shared. His love and talents live on in each member of his family, and he will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his daughters, Pamela Metott and her companion Robert Luther of Ilion, and Penny Garski of Herkimer, grandchildren, Joseph Metott and his companion, Lindsay Dodge, Scott Metott, Brandy Flike and her husband Ryan, and Tyler, Taylor, and Tarra Garski; great-grandchildren, Joey, Carter, Casey, Brynlee and Mason Metott; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and In-Laws, Edward Hassett and his wife Shirley, and Helen Lynch and her husband Donald.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Therese, two infant sons, Harold A. Ray, III in 1956, and Bradley Ray in 1957; his brothers, Robert and Egbert “Dutch,” and a son-in-law, Joseph Metott in 1996.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday December 30, 2017 in the Enea & Ciaccia Funeral Home Chapel, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (Town of Frankfort) at 4:00 PM. The family will be present in the funeral home chapel on Saturday from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM (one hour prior to the funeral service). Interment at Mohawk Cemetery, Village, will be in the Spring of 2018. All services have been arranged with Funeral Directors Harry & Kevin Enea & Martin Ciaccia at (315) 894-8000.
