I am so sorry for the loss of a truly great man and friend. I met Hector on my travels through the Irish settlement. Hector showed me and my mother where her family's home stead was. It was so amazing to see the land and read about it in his books. RIP Hector. You wear one of the great ones. Janet Steenburg

Mr. Allen was both my teacher and advisor for SADD. His bad dad jokes and quick wit were like no other in LFHS. I am one of the fortunate to say I had Mr. Allen as an influence in my life. Thank you for being a positive adult role model. I hope I'm at least half the teacher you were sir.

Hello Catharine. You bring up yet another facet of Dad's life and career with him as an advisor to SADD. I am glad you remembered his thoughts and humor. It is also good to see that even today he is having a positive influence on teachers. Thank you !

Mr. Allen was a great teacher. He made learning interesting through his stories, humor and factual information. I was lucky enough to have him for American and World history. He and others like Mr. Kotary , Mr. Tucker influenced my decision to become a 33 year Science teacher in the Homer Central school district. May he Rest In Peace.

Many thanks Richard for your compliments on my Dad as an influential teacher. And congratulations to you on a long career as a teacher. Dad was always in learning mode. He read voraciously (mostly history books) and interacted with a lot of people in discussions about history. That kept him sharp in his career. I too was influenced by Mr. Tucker and became an engineer as a result. Teachers are an important part of our lives !

I can remember in th early 1980s going to the Acorn Shop. One time my Mom bought a double bike from there. My two relatives rode it all the way to the farm on River Road. You never knew what was going to be there.

We live in the former Komar home on Baum Road, Saint Johnsville and had the privilege of meeting Hector and Shirley. They shared a lot of the family history with us. We feel blessed to be living in this wonderful home and love it very much.
We send our condolences to the family and will keep all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
Truly,

Earl and Elizabeth thank you for bringing back old time memories. I am so glad you are happy in the old Komar homestead. My Dad spent quite a lot of time there courting my Mom and later on helping my grandfather with projects. The cellar dig out was a big project along with the retaining wall for the pond. We had lots of family gatherings there with cooking fish from the pond and swimming galore.

Thank you Mark for your memories. Yes, Dad was fond of Jack Daniels, even to the point where he had a deed to 1 square inch of the JD distillery which we toured when I was quite young. He mostly liked sharing a beverage with friends, so I am glad you stopped by to share.

My Mom and Dad, Charlie and Marian really liked Hector and they took some Civil War trips together. They always found the trips enjoyable. I know Hector worked hard at putting the trips together. Then, they would get together at Ripeppi's for occasional meetings. RIP Hector.

I am so saddened by this news. I loved Hector and his whole family so very much. His daughter Celia was dating and married my friend Shaye Williams. We would often stop at his house in Oppenheim on our way to SPAC. We had so many good times at the Allen house. He had the best stories and advice galore. He had much more influence on me than I think he or I ever knew. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I’m so sorry to hear of Hector’s passing. I was honored to visit his record room. He was always helpful and we shared a passion for history. Suzanne and Celia were in my classes, studious and respectful, like their parents. It’s hard to lose a life partner but he spent the rest of his life with you, peace to all.

Thank you Harold and Betty for your message of sympathy. The books that Dad wrote on Oppenheim history were quite important to him and he really appreciated all inputs to make them an accurate record . So many readers will enjoy the books for years to come.

Mr. Allen was my history teacher in the later 60's. He was a wonderful teacher; so smart and so knowledgeable. He had a special way of teaching that made learning fun! He certainly influenced many lives, as well as leaving our community with many memories and some valuable historical information. He will definitely be remembered by many as a good man and an asset to our community. Condolences to his family.

Thank you Carol for your old time memories of Dad. Dad appreciated his years at Little Falls and surprisingly remembered so many of his students and their stories. It was evident when I would be out with my Dad and he would see former students, inquire about their lives and be able to relay an old classroom story back to them. He was always in learning mode, which made him a great teacher.
