Obituary of Caroline A. Dunckel

Caroline A. (Davis) Dunckel, age 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, February 8, 2023, after a brief illness, at the MVHS St. Luke’s Campus. Born on September 26, 1939, Caroline was the daughter of the late Voris Davis and Esther (Stanton) Davis. She also knew the love and guidance of her stepmothers, Thelma Krenichyn and Arlene Davis. She spent her earliest years in New York City before relocating with her family to Mohawk where she attended local schools and graduated from Mohawk High School with the Class of 1957. She then went on to continue her education in the nursing program at MVCC where she earned her license as a Registered Nurse. She would go on to further her studies in nursing, eventually earning the title of Family Nurse Practitioner. Caroline had an esteemed career as a healthcare provider throughout the Mohawk Valley and beyond. She worked for Mohawk Valley General Hospital in Ilion, Herkimer Memorial Hospital, Herkimer County Social Services, Herkimer County Public Health Department, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Hartford, Planned Parenthood and Child Protective Services; she even spent a portion of her working years in Saudi Arabia at the King Fahad Hospital. Her last position was in Utica where she worked as a Nurse Practitioner for the New York State McPike Addiction Treatment Center. In her spare time, Caroline enjoyed reading and television and would often be found travelling to visit her children in different parts of the country, primarily Washington State, Montana and Long Island, NY. She was also truly passionate about and a staunch supporter of women’s rights. Caroline is survived by her daughters, Dr. Phyllis Dunckel, MD and husband, Mark Bailey, of Talent, Oregon and Alicia Dunckel Mazza and husband, William Mazza, of West Gilgo Beach, Long Island, NY; by her sons, Philip Dunckel and wife, Abigail, of Bigfork, Montana, Steve Dunckel and wife, Julie, of Hubbardsville, NY, and Scott Dunckel and wife, Tina, of Mohawk; she also leaves her grandchildren, Adam Dunckel, Steven Dunckel, Mark Dunckel, Casey and Connor Dunckel, Ryan Edmunds, Joshua Edmunds, Bella, Abby and Sophie Mazza; and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves her sister, Debra Beaudoin and husband, Paul, of New York Mills, NY; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws, Margaret “Peg” Bianchi, Jeanie and Dan Burling and Bob and Annette Dunckel. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Eric Davis. Caroline’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will take place in the spring at a date and time to be announced. Final interment will be held in Mohawk Cemetery.
