Obituary of Robert Fagan

Mr. Robert J. "Bob" Fagan, Sr., age 82, of 304 E. German St., Herkimer, beloved husband of Florence M. Fagan, passed away on Monday evening, March 3, 2003 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Born on March 1, 1921 in Herkimer he was the son of the late Harry V. and Gladys Fagan. He received his education in St. Francis de Sales School, Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School. He was a lifelong Herkimer resident. He served his country with honor and distinction aboard the Air Craft Carrier USS Kalinin Bay with the U.S. Navy and received commission from Notre Dame University. He enlisted on August 20, 1942. He was honorably discharged as Ensign USNR in December of 1945. Mr. Fagan was joined in marriage with the former Florence M. Pickersgill on July 14, 1945 in St. Francis de Sales Rectory in Herkimer with the Rev. John R. Kehoe officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Fagan have shared an abiding love and respect for one another and a deep commitment to their marriage and raising their children. He was last employed with MDS retiring in 1983. He was also employed at one time by Sperry Rand UNIVAC as Production Control Supervisor. Mr. Fagan was a community-minded individual and enjoyed coaching Little League in Herkimer. He served on the committee to choose a site for Herkimer County Community College and served as chairman on the citizens committee of the Oneida- Herkimer Vocational Technical Complex which is now in East Herkimer. He was an avid baseball fan and especially enjoyed watching the New York Yankees. Mr. Fagan appreciated the beauty and peace and shared cherished moments with his family at their camp on Canadarago Lake. Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Florence M. Fagan of the home address, two sons, James V. Fagan of Newport and Robert J. Fagan, Jr. of Mohawk, two cherished grandchildren, Ryan and Brendan Fagan, two sisters in law, Gladys Johnston of Fl., and Mildred Pickersgill of South Carolina, several nieces, nephews and cousins. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial which will commence at 10am from St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger St., Herkimer on Thursday, March 6, 2003 with the Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor, officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends in the vestibule of the church following the Mass. Spring interment will take place privately in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs. The Holleran-Enea Funeral Home of Herkimer (866-1011) is serving the family. Kindly consider contributions in honor of Mr. Fagan to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society, envelopes are available at the funeral home and may be obtained in the church vestibule on Thursday morning. The family extends its appreciation to doctors and staff of Adirondack Community Physicians, Faxton Hospital, and Dr. Desai for their compassion and concern.
