Obituary of Stanley F. Van Alstyne

UTICA – Mr. Stanley F. Van Alstyne, age 95, currently of Utica and formerly of Ilion, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, April 30, 2017 at the St. Luke’s Home in New Hartford.

Born on March 7, 1922, Stanley was the son of the late Frank F. and Edna L. (Geiger) Van Alstyne. He was a graduate of Ilion High School with the Class of 1942, and soon thereafter enlisted with the United States Navy. He proudly served his country as a Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class throughout World War II.

For over 38 years, Stanley was employed as a cutter and grinder with the Remington Arms Company in Ilion, until his retirement in 1980. When he wasn’t hard at work, Stanley was heavily involved with various organizations throughout the Mohawk Valley. He was a member of the Utica American Legion, Ilion VFW, Ilion Elks Lodge, Ilion Fish & Game Club, the Lake Pleasant, Salisbury and Indian Lake snowmobile clubs, and a former member of the Remington Arms 25 Year Club.

Stanley was an avid snowmobiler, hunter and fisherman. He was proud to be one of the original founders of the Wilds Hunt Club in Gray, NY, and actively maintained the friendships he created there throughout his lifetime.

Survivors include his sister, Beverly Hafele of Floyd; his nephews, William J. Hafele and Thomas E. Hafele, both of Floyd; and his great-niece, Lacy Stephens. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant brother, Thomas Van Alstyne, and a sister, Esther Van Alstyne.

In keeping with Stanley’s wishes, there will be no formal calling hours or funeral service. He will be cremated and his ashes will be brought to the hunting camp that he loved so dearly.
